AltoLab & Soccer

AltoLab training has a huge potential to improve fitness and play for soccer. During a 90 min
soccer match players typically run between 10-12 km, with a 75 kg player expending approx
5700 kJ at a VO2 max of 60ml /kg /min. Most activity consists of aerobic "off -the-ball"
movement - to create space for teammates and chase down opposing players. Those who
maintain a high "off -the-ball" work-rate during a game gain an advantage over equally kicks
and kicks and heading etc., are primarily heading etc., are primarily anaerobicanaerobic
activities that occur intermittently, at an average, every 30 average, every 30 seconds for each
player. These events are ultimately more crucial to the outcome of the outcome of the match.
Players who undergo regularmatch. Players who undergo regular AltoLab AltoLab training
find that they can sustain their aerobic sustain their aerobic activities over longer periods and
are able to refresh and do more repeated high intensity anaerobic sprints throughout a game,
especially towards the end of the match when many of their opponents become fatigued.
AltoLab training also allows players to train harder so they can increase their overall muscle
strength for burst activities enabling them to jump higher and kick farther. David Dunn of the
2009 Blackburn Rovers saw a great improvement in his overall play and noticed few injuries
and better recovery between matches after he started his AltoLab training in July 2009.

One of the great challenges is how to measure results in soccer players before and after a
specific training practice. This is no different with AltoLab training as the metrics for
measuring speed or endurance are not as clear cut as they are for cycling or running
sports. Yes, it is possible to measure VO2 max and take blood tests to measure
hematocrit and hemoglobin before and after a course of AltoLab training, but these tests
do not always give a true picture as to how a soccer player will perform. Newer tests for
soccer are becoming available and we at AltoLab are working with professional soccer
clubs to establish protocols for measuring performance in individual players, by heart rate
analysis and sophisticated imaging capture software such as ProZone and Castrol
Rankings to evaluate game play. Standby for future word on this.
