AltoLab has helped athletes get acclimated to high altitude at Leadville mountain bike and running races
since 2008. To prepare for high altitude sports above 10,000 ft,  it is necessary to prepare several weeks
in advance. Experts agree that a minimum of 3 weeks of living 24/7 at altitude are needed to acclimate.
However, this is impractical and many people actually get weaker when they live and train at high altitude
for this amount of time. That is because the continuous, low levels of oxygen impair recovery from training.
One way to overcome this a Live High, Train Low (LHTL) program. Here individuals train hard at low
altitudes (2000 ft) during the day and travel to high altitudes (8000 - 10,000 ft) each night to sleep. With this
program people are able to recover better than by living 24/7 at 9000 ft. However, finding the ideal place to
do this and cost and time necessary to travel back and forth are a burden. That is why altitude tents and
hypoxicators were invented. However, these too are a pain. They cost a fortune, between $5000-$30,000
or $400 per month to rent, are uncomfortable to use and are too bulky to travel with.

AltoLab Hypoxic Silos
The hypoxic silo is absolutely essential for making AltoLab work. It
removes the carbon dioxide from the air you exhale. This exhaled air is now
low in oxygen, by mixing this with fresh air coming in through the base of
the
AltoLab unit, it effectively lowers the oxygen content to simulate high
altitude conditions. It is this low-content oxygen that you breathe in that
stimulates your body to start making its own EPO (erythropoetin), the
hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. This is one of the major
benefits of altitude training.
AltoLab was invented by a triathlete as a superior way to provide a portable altitude simulator at a
fraction of the cost that can be used anywhere, any time.
AltoLab is a small re-breathing devices that
allows you to adjust and reach a simulated altitude of between 2500 to 25,000 ft in 2 min. It uses a
blood oxygen and heart rate monitor (oximeter) that you wear on your finger to monitor your internal
oxygen levels. When using
AltoLab you only "stay" at the 20,000 ft for intervals no longer than 6 min at a
time.
AltoLab allows interval training at high altitude while sitting in front of your TV at home.

Use AltoLab for only 1 hr per day for 15 days to see the first results. Afterwards, take a 15-day break and
then use
AltoLab for only 5 days followed by a 15-day break. Continue with these 5-days top-ups and
15-days breaks until a week before Leadville. Using
AltoLab for about 3 months before Leadville is ideal.
